What MiniDV Is
Introduced in 1995, MiniDV is a small digital cassette, a little larger than a matchbox, that became the dominant camcorder format of the late 90s and 2000s. It recorded a clean digital picture that still holds up today, if you can read the tape.
The signal is digital, but it lives on a thin ribbon of tape that can jam, drop out, and shed with age like any other cassette.
MiniDV bridged home video into the memory-card era, so these tapes often hold the most recent, and most complete, family footage.
Because the cassettes are tiny, boxes of them get forgotten in drawers. They are worth digging out and digitizing.
The camcorders and decks that read MiniDV are aging out, and dropouts on old tape can be tricky to recover without the right gear.
Why Digitize MiniDV Now
As MiniDV tape ages, digital dropouts and glitches increase. Capturing sooner means fewer gaps in the finished video.
Working MiniDV camcorders are increasingly scarce, and many people no longer have the FireWire hardware to capture from them.
MiniDV can stick or jam in an old deck. Do not force a troublesome tape at home; send it in.
You do not need a camcorder or a computer. Send the tapes and we capture them on maintained equipment.
MiniDV Transfer Pricing
Most MiniDV tapes hold about an hour, so one tape is one flat charge.
Delivery on flash drive or hard drive, and optionally on DVD: $5 per disc for disc-only orders, $15 per disc when a drive is included. $50 order minimum. We skip blank footage and never charge for the empty parts of a tape.
