The transfer method determines what your family actually gets to see. Standard definition transfers crop the frame and flatten the color. Ours don't.

Simple, honest pricing. Pay only for what we convert.
No prepaid boxes. No paying full price for half-full reels. Our estimator assumes full reels, so clients typically pay a little less than their quote, not more.
A standard 3" reel holds 50 feet. Blank, unrunnable, or empty footage is never charged. Send 20 half-full reels and pay for 10 reels' worth of film.

Clean & recondition
Every reel is cleaned and lubricated with the same solution studios use on archival prints. Never isopropyl alcohol, which dries and damages film over time.
Frame-by-frame scan
Touchless, sprocket-free capture under cold LED light. No hot bulbs, no gears, no projector. Gentle enough that we've run film from 1924.
Scene-by-scene review
A technician adjusts color, contrast and brightness before delivery. We can't always make old film perfect, but we make it look as good as it can.
Returned better than it arrived
Splices repaired as needed. One family's film in the studio area at a time, and no reel ever leaves the building.

Frequently Asked Questions
Higher quality means bigger files, and bigger files need a bigger drive. We scan film with far less compression than most high-volume labs, and we can even deliver MOV or ProRes files that are larger still, so we keep the fine detail and color heavy compression discards. We charge only what the drive costs for the storage your project needs, with no markup, so a larger drive isn’t an upcharge, it’s simply the room your higher-quality transfer takes.
Usually, yes, and often better than expected after color correction. Some film is degraded beyond a perfect image, but we deliver the best result the film can give.
Yes. Once loaded, Technicolor is scanned frame by frame in HD or 2K with optional color correction, exactly like our other film formats.
Technicolor cartridges must be opened and the film loaded carefully to avoid damage. The flat $5 per cartridge covers that extra step. It is never discounted.
About $19 each: roughly $14 of footage at the Gold HD special ($0.28/ft for ~50 feet) plus a flat $5 handling charge per cartridge for the extra care they require.
MP4 by default, or MOV/ProRes on request, on a flash drive or hard drive, and optionally on DVD or Blu-ray. Your original reels come home too.
Yes. We handle reels from small to very large, including the substantial reels common in documentary and institutional collections.
Yes. Sound 16mm carries an audio track that we read in sync as we scan, so your video plays with its original sound. Sound film is 10 cents more per foot.
Often, yes. 16mm carries enough detail to reward the higher resolution, which is why Professional 2K is a popular choice for it.
From $0.28 per foot at the Gold HD special (regularly $0.40). Because 16mm holds more detail, many clients choose Platinum or Professional 2K; see the film hub for all three tiers. You pay only for the footage we actually transfer.
How Legacy Digital compares on film quality
The mail-in box services (Legacybox, Southtree, Kodak Digitizing) and the big-box stores digitize film at 480p standard definition, one-to-one, with no color correction. Legacy Digital scans at Full HD 1080p or 2K (higher than the film itself), with scene-by-scene color restoration, on studio-grade equipment (the type developed for the Academy of Motion Pictures). That is why Hollywood studios and executives, Netflix productions, and universities choose us.
| Film quality | Mail-in and big-box services | Legacy Digital |
|---|---|---|
| Scan resolution | 480p SD (their published spec) | Full HD 1080p or 2K |
| Color and restoration | One-to-one, none | Scene-by-scene color restoration + grain reduction |
| Who does it | Mailed to a bulk facility | In-house since 2001, studio-grade scanners, never lost an item |
