About Betamax tapes
Betamax was Sony’s 1975 videocassette format, famously the higher-quality rival that lost the “format war” to VHS. Plenty of families recorded on Beta into the 1980s, and those tapes are still sitting in closets today.
Beta tapes degrade like any analog tape, with dropout, mold, and sticky-shed. But the bigger problem is the equipment: working Betamax decks are now rare and expensive, so the window to transfer these tapes is genuinely closing.
You cannot play Betamax in a VHS VCR; they are entirely different, incompatible formats. Without a working Beta deck there is simply no way to recover the footage, which is why so few labs still accept these tapes.
How we convert your Betamax tapes
We capture Betamax with far less compression than the mail-in services (about 12.5 GB per two-hour tape versus about 1 GB), monitor every tape in real time, and try multiple decks when a tape plays poorly, so you keep finer detail and richer color.
We maintain working Betamax decks, which most labs no longer have, and inspect and clean each tape before a real-time, monitored capture. If you also have professional Betacam or Betacam SP broadcast tapes, those are a different format and are quoted separately; just ask.
The Legacy Digital quality difference
Not all tape transfers are equal. Most mail-in and big-box services run Betamax tapes through in bulk and compress the result down to a small, soft file. We do the opposite: a low-compression capture on serviced decks, watched in real time, so you keep the detail and color that are actually on the tape.
| Betamax quality | Mail-in & big-box services | Legacy Digital |
|---|---|---|
| Resolution | 640×480 (480p SD) | Higher-detail, low-compression capture |
| Data per 2-hour tape | About 1 to 2 GB | About 12.5 GB |
| Process | Run in bulk in a warehouse | Monitored in real time, multiple decks, blank footage trimmed |
Typical mail-in service: soft, heavily compressed 480p.
Legacy Digital: low-compression capture that keeps fine detail and truer color.

Cost and frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to convert Betamax to digital?
We charge per tape, not per premade box, so you only pay for the tapes we actually transfer. Betamax conversion runs about $19.95 per two-hour tape (current special; regularly $28.50), and you get an exact, itemized quote before you commit. See current pricing and get a free quote.
Can I play Betamax in a VHS player?
No. Betamax and VHS are different, incompatible formats. Beta needs a Betamax deck, which is now rare, which is why we keep them on hand.
Are old Betamax tapes worth transferring?
Yes, especially now. As working Beta decks become scarce, transferring soon may be the last chance to recover the footage.
Do you also convert Betacam?
Yes. Professional Betacam and Betacam SP broadcast tapes are a different format from consumer Betamax and are priced separately. Let us know what you have and we will quote it.
Will I get digital files or a DVD?
You get digital files (MP4) that you own, on a flash drive or hard drive, so you can share, edit, and stream them. A DVD or Blu-ray is available as an optional add-on.
Why families choose us over the big-box mail-in services
The large mail-in operations compete on price, not on your memories. They repackage your originals into boxes, mix them in with thousands of other jobs, and run them through in bulk, and some send the work overseas for cheaper labor. There are documented cases online of these companies losing customers’ irreplaceable footage for good.
Legacy Digital does none of that. Every Betamax tape is transferred in-house by our own team in Orange, California, never subcontracted and never shipped out of the country. In more than two decades and over a million reels and tapes handled, we have never lost a single item. We regularly re-do work for families who were disappointed by a bargain service the first time; the only thing they regret is not coming to us first.

Legacy Digital did a fabulous job of getting our old family films and slides on dvd for my parents’ anniversary. The quality was amazing and my parents were so surprised. Scott was so helpful picking up and delivering our order saving us time and gas money and keeping our family treasures safe from the mail. I definitely would recommend them to anyone and in fact am calling them again to do all of our VHS tapes and camcorder tapes next.
