About Hi8 tapes
Hi8 (high-band Video8) is a Sony analog camcorder format introduced in 1989. It improved on Video8 with sharper, higher-resolution recordings on metal-particle or metal-evaporated 8mm tape, and it was a hugely popular family camcorder format right through the late 1990s. If you filmed birthdays, recitals, and vacations on a palm-sized Sony Handycam in that era, there is a good chance it was Hi8.
That metal coating is exactly what fails first. As Hi8 tapes age, the coating sheds and produces the tell-tale “sparkles,” horizontal streaks, and audio dropouts that get worse every year. Once the dropout is severe, whole passages can become unwatchable, so the sooner these are transferred, the more of the original picture survives.
Hi8 also cannot be played in a VCR. It needs a working Hi8 or Digital8 camcorder or deck, and those are increasingly rare and expensive on the used market. The playback machine matters as much as the tape: a poorly tracking deck will add noise that was never in the original recording.
How we convert your Hi8 tapes
We capture Hi8 with far less compression than the mail-in services (about 12.5 GB per two-hour tape versus about 1 GB), monitor every tape in real time, and try multiple decks when a tape plays poorly, so you keep finer detail and richer color.
We have transferred thousands of Hi8 tapes and keep several serviced Hi8 and Digital8 transports on hand, so when a tape tracks poorly on one deck we can try it on another instead of accepting a noisy capture. Every cassette is inspected and, where needed, cleaned before transfer, and we watch each one in real time rather than running tapes unattended in bulk.
The Legacy Digital quality difference
Not all tape transfers are equal. Most mail-in and big-box services run Hi8 tapes through in bulk and compress the result down to a small, soft file. We do the opposite: a low-compression capture on serviced decks, watched in real time, so you keep the detail and color that are actually on the tape.
| Hi8 quality | Mail-in & big-box services | Legacy Digital |
|---|---|---|
| Resolution | 640×480 (480p SD) | Higher-detail, low-compression capture |
| Data per 2-hour tape | About 1 to 2 GB | About 12.5 GB |
| Process | Run in bulk in a warehouse | Monitored in real time, multiple decks, blank footage trimmed |
Typical mail-in service: soft, heavily compressed 480p.
Legacy Digital: low-compression capture that keeps fine detail and truer color.

Cost and frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to convert Hi8 to digital?
We charge per tape, not per premade box, so you only pay for the tapes we actually transfer. Hi8 conversion runs about $19.95 per two-hour tape (current special; regularly $28.50), and you get an exact, itemized quote before you commit. See current pricing and get a free quote.
Can I play a Hi8 tape in a VCR?
No. Hi8 is an 8mm camcorder format and will not fit or play in a VHS VCR. It needs a Hi8 or Digital8 camcorder or deck, which is what we use.
My Hi8 tape has sparkles and lines, can it still be saved?
Usually, yes. Those artifacts come from the tape coating shedding. We clean the tape, try it across multiple decks, and capture as much of the original picture as possible.
Can you fix a Hi8 tape that will not play or is jammed?
Often, yes. We carefully handle jammed, squealing, and shell-damaged 8mm cassettes and recover the footage whenever the tape physically allows.
Will I get digital files or a DVD?
You get digital files (MP4) that you own, on a flash drive or hard drive, so you can share, edit, and stream them. A DVD or Blu-ray is available as an optional add-on.
Why families choose us over the big-box mail-in services
The large mail-in operations compete on price, not on your memories. They repackage your originals into boxes, mix them in with thousands of other jobs, and run them through in bulk, and some send the work overseas for cheaper labor. There are documented cases online of these companies losing customers’ irreplaceable footage for good.
Legacy Digital does none of that. Every Hi8 tape is transferred in-house by our own team in Orange, California, never subcontracted and never shipped out of the country. In more than two decades and over a million reels and tapes handled, we have never lost a single item. We regularly re-do work for families who were disappointed by a bargain service the first time; the only thing they regret is not coming to us first.

Legacy Digital did a fabulous job of getting our old family films and slides on dvd for my parents’ anniversary. The quality was amazing and my parents were so surprised. Scott was so helpful picking up and delivering our order saving us time and gas money and keeping our family treasures safe from the mail. I definitely would recommend them to anyone and in fact am calling them again to do all of our VHS tapes and camcorder tapes next.
