About 8mm Video tapes
“8mm video” is the family of small camcorder cassettes Sony introduced in 1985. It covers three related formats: Video8 (the 1985 original), Hi8 (the sharper 1989 version), and Digital8 (the 1999 digital version). They are all the palm-sized tapes from Handycam-era camcorders, and, importantly, they are NOT the same thing as 8mm movie film on reels.
The analog 8mm formats, Video8 and Hi8, shed their coating and develop “sparkles,” streaks, and dropout as they age, while Digital8 tends to freeze or glitch. Either way, the picture gets a little worse every year the tapes sit in a closet.
None of the 8mm formats play in a VCR; they need an 8mm camcorder or deck, and the right one depends on which of the three you have. Not sure which you have? Send them in and we will identify and transfer each one correctly.
How we convert your 8mm Video tapes
We capture 8mm Video with far less compression than the mail-in services (about 12.5 GB per two-hour tape versus about 1 GB), monitor every tape in real time, and try multiple decks when a tape plays poorly, so you keep finer detail and richer color.
We keep serviced Video8, Hi8, and Digital8 transports on hand, so a mixed box of 8mm tapes gets sorted and transferred on the right machine for each one, cleaned, inspected, and monitored in real time. Know your exact format? See our dedicated pages for Video8, Hi8, and Digital8.
The Legacy Digital quality difference
Not all tape transfers are equal. Most mail-in and big-box services run 8mm Video tapes through in bulk and compress the result down to a small, soft file. We do the opposite: a low-compression capture on serviced decks, watched in real time, so you keep the detail and color that are actually on the tape.
| 8mm Video quality | Mail-in & big-box services | Legacy Digital |
|---|---|---|
| Resolution | 640×480 (480p SD) | Higher-detail, low-compression capture |
| Data per 2-hour tape | About 1 to 2 GB | About 12.5 GB |
| Process | Run in bulk in a warehouse | Monitored in real time, multiple decks, blank footage trimmed |
Typical mail-in service: soft, heavily compressed 480p.
Legacy Digital: low-compression capture that keeps fine detail and truer color.

Cost and frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to convert 8mm Video to digital?
We charge per tape, not per premade box, so you only pay for the tapes we actually transfer. 8mm Video conversion runs about $19.95 per two-hour tape (current special; regularly $28.50), and you get an exact, itemized quote before you commit. See current pricing and get a free quote.
Is 8mm video tape the same as 8mm film?
No. 8mm video is a camcorder cassette (Video8, Hi8, or Digital8); 8mm film is movie film on a reel. They look nothing alike and use completely different equipment. We convert both.
How do I tell Video8, Hi8, and Digital8 apart?
They use the same size cassette, so it can be hard to tell. The label on the tape or the camcorder usually says which it is. If you are not sure, we will identify each tape and transfer it correctly.
Can I play 8mm video tapes in a VCR?
No. They need an 8mm camcorder or deck (Video8, Hi8, or Digital8), never a VHS VCR.
Will I get digital files or a DVD?
You get digital files (MP4) that you own, on a flash drive or hard drive, so you can share, edit, and stream them. A DVD or Blu-ray is available as an optional add-on.
Why families choose us over the big-box mail-in services
The large mail-in operations compete on price, not on your memories. They repackage your originals into boxes, mix them in with thousands of other jobs, and run them through in bulk, and some send the work overseas for cheaper labor. There are documented cases online of these companies losing customers’ irreplaceable footage for good.
Legacy Digital does none of that. Every 8mm Video tape is transferred in-house by our own team in Orange, California, never subcontracted and never shipped out of the country. In more than two decades and over a million reels and tapes handled, we have never lost a single item. We regularly re-do work for families who were disappointed by a bargain service the first time; the only thing they regret is not coming to us first.

Legacy Digital did a fabulous job of getting our old family films and slides on dvd for my parents’ anniversary. The quality was amazing and my parents were so surprised. Scott was so helpful picking up and delivering our order saving us time and gas money and keeping our family treasures safe from the mail. I definitely would recommend them to anyone and in fact am calling them again to do all of our VHS tapes and camcorder tapes next.
