The digitizing market looks crowded, but nearly all the mail-in and drop-off names trace back to just three operators. This is confirmed on the companies’ own websites.

Why an independent local lab is different
The mail-in-box and drop-off services are built for volume and low sticker prices. That is fine for a few basic tapes, and we will say so. But for irreplaceable memories, the differences matter.
What often happens with the big services:
- Film is captured as a plain one-to-one transfer, with no color correction, grain reduction, or restoration (Legacybox states this in its own words).
- Your irreplaceable originals are mailed to a shared facility in another state, and the brand you trusted often disclaims responsibility for loss or damage.
- Finished files sit in a cloud that expires or behind a subscription, and a physical USB or disc costs extra.
- If they decide an item cannot be transferred, you can still pay for it.
