The mail-in-box and drop-off services are built for volume and low sticker prices. That is fine for a few basic tapes, and we will say so. But for irreplaceable memories, the differences matter.
What often happens with the big services:
- Film is captured as a plain one-to-one transfer, with no color correction, grain reduction, or restoration (Legacybox states this in its own words).
- Your irreplaceable originals are mailed to a shared facility in another state, and the brand you trusted often disclaims responsibility for loss or damage.
- Finished files sit in a cloud that expires or behind a subscription, and a physical USB or disc costs extra.
- If they decide an item cannot be transferred, you can still pay for it.
How Legacy Digital is different: we are an independent lab in Orange, California, digitizing in-house since 2001, and we have never lost a single item across more than a million reels and millions of items handled. We do true frame-by-frame HD and 2K film scanning with scene-by-scene color restoration, we quote per item so you know the cost up front, and you keep your finished files and your originals. Questions About Choosing a Service
Is Legacy Digital part of one of the big digitizing companies?
No. Legacy Digital Productions is an independent lab, founded by Scott Foster in Orange, California in 2001. We do every transfer ourselves, in our own studio.
Do you ever send my media to another facility?
No. Your media stays in our Orange studio from the day it arrives until the day it goes home. We never subcontract, and nothing is sent out of the country.
Do I have to buy a box or a kit to get a price?
No. Build a free itemized estimate online or call us. A Safe Shipping Kit is there if you want one, and you can also ship your own box or drop off in person.
What if you cannot convert one of my items?
You are not charged for its conversion, and the original comes back to you.
How do I compare quality before I choose?
Ask any service for its scan resolution, how much data each tape produces, whether film gets color correction, and where the work is done. We publish ours: film in HD or 2K, about 12.5 GB per two-hour tape, and everything done in-house.
