Convert Your Digital8 Tapes to Digital Files.

Digital quality on a familiar little tape

Digital8 recorded clean digital video on the same 8mm-style cassette, bridging the camcorder era into the digital age around 2000. We transfer it to digital MP4 at roughly 12.5 GB per two-hour tape, monitored in real time, on equipment most people no longer own.

What Digital8 Is

Introduced by Sony in 1999, Digital8 recorded digital video onto the same style of 8mm tape used by Video8 and Hi8. It gave families cleaner, more stable quality while keeping the familiar cassette.

Digital picture, 8mm shell

Unlike analog Video8 and Hi8, Digital8 stores a digital signal, so a good transfer preserves a notably cleaner image.

The bridge into the digital era

Digital8 sat between the analog camcorder years and MiniDV, so these tapes often hold turn-of-the-millennium family footage.

Looks like Video8 and Hi8

The cassette is nearly identical to the analog 8mm formats. You do not need to tell them apart; we identify each by its recording.

The camcorders are gone

Digital8 camcorders are now rare, leaving the tapes with no easy way to play at home.

Why Digitize Digital8 Now

Tape is still tape

Even though the signal is digital, it lives on magnetic tape that can shed, jam, and grow mold with age.

Playback hardware is scarce

The specific Digital8 camcorders needed to read these tapes are increasingly hard to find in working order.

Turn-of-the-century memories

Digital8 often captured the late 90s and early 2000s, a stretch of family life worth pulling off tape.

No player, no problem

You do not need a working camcorder. Send the tapes and we play and capture them on maintained equipment.

Digital8 Questions

How much does it cost?
$19.95 per two-hour tape at the current special ($28.50 regular), the same as Video8 and Hi8.
Is Digital8 different from Video8 and Hi8?
Yes. Video8 and Hi8 are analog; Digital8 records a digital signal on the same style of tape, which usually means a cleaner picture.
How do I know if I have Digital8?
You do not have to. The 8mm formats look nearly identical, so we identify each tape by its recording. Send them mixed together.
Can you convert sticky or moldy Digital8 tapes?
Frequently, yes, and you should stop playing them at home. Send them in and we handle affected tapes carefully; caught early, most still transfer.
How do I get my videos back?
MP4 files on a flash drive or hard drive, and optionally on DVD. Your original tapes come home too.
Can you combine my Digital8 with other tapes and media on one drive?
Yes. If you are also converting other tapes, film, photos, slides, or audio, we place everything on the same drive in organized folders so your whole archive lives in one place.
How long does it take?
Turnaround depends on the size of your order and the current queue. We give you an estimated timeframe with your quote and never rush the work at the expense of quality.
Do you have a minimum order?
Yes, a $50 order minimum, not counting drives or discs.
