Why Move Your DVDs to Files

A DVD felt permanent when it was burned, but the disc itself is one of the shorter-lived ways your memories have ever been stored.

Discs do not last forever

Recordable DVDs store video in a dye layer that fades over the years, a problem known as disc rot. A disc that played fine a decade ago can freeze, pixelate, or refuse to load today. Files on a drive are stable and easy to copy.

Players are vanishing

New computers ship without a DVD drive, and fewer homes keep a working DVD player near the TV. Digital files play on any phone, tablet, laptop, or smart TV, with nothing to plug in.

Easy to share and stream

An MP4 can be copied to every family member, dropped into cloud storage, and streamed from the couch. A single disc can only be in one place, in one player, at one time.

One organized archive

Once your DVDs are files, we can put them on the same drive as your converted tapes, film, and photos, sorted into folders so your whole family history lives in one place.

If a disc is scratched or has started to skip, do not toss it. Many marginal discs still read on the right equipment, and the sooner it comes in, the more of it we can recover.

What We Can and Cannot Convert

We convert discs you own the rights to. That covers almost every disc people bring us.

Yes: your own memories

Home-movie DVDs, discs a lab burned from your family tapes or film, wedding and event discs, recital and game footage, and any personal video you own. If it is your material, or you are the owner of it, we can convert it.

No: commercial or copyrighted

We cannot copy or convert Hollywood movies, TV shows, purchased concert or fitness discs, or any commercial or trademarked disc. Those are owned by someone else, and duplicating them is not something we do.

Not sure which yours are? Send them in and we will sort it out. When there is any question, we set the disc aside and simply ask you before touching it.

DVD Conversion Pricing

A DVD already holds digital video, so converting one is a clean transfer rather than a real-time recapture. Pricing is per disc and depends on how many discs you have and how much they hold, so the honest answer is a free itemized quote.

Free, Itemized
Per Discquoted up front

Tell us roughly how many discs you have and we give you a firm, line-by-line price before any work begins. No surprises, no per-minute meter running.

Delivery on flash drive (orders under 256 GB) or hard drive, priced at our cost with no markup. There is a $50 order minimum, not counting drives, and your original discs always come home. Orders over $250 in conversion typically qualify for 10% off through the estimate calculator.

Why Convert With Legacy Digital

No second round of compression

A DVD is already compressed once. Some services squeeze it again into a small file and lose more quality. We transfer the disc's video into MP4 while keeping it as close to the original as possible, so the copy looks like the disc, not worse.

Everything stays in-house

Your discs are handled by our own team in Orange, California, never subcontracted and never sent overseas. In over a million reels and millions of items handled since 2001, we have never lost one.

Your originals come home

Converting a disc does not destroy it. You get your MP4 files on a drive and your original DVDs back in the same box.

Combined and organized

We can merge your DVDs with converted tapes, film, and photos onto one drive, kept in folders the way you have them grouped, so the whole archive is easy to navigate.

DVD to Digital Questions

What discs can you convert?
Personal, home-movie DVDs that you own the rights to, including discs that were burned from your own tapes or film. We do not copy commercial or copyrighted discs such as movies, TV shows, or purchased programs.
What format do I get back?
MP4 files on a flash drive or hard drive, ready to store, back up, share, and stream. Your original discs come home too.
How much does it cost?
Pricing is per disc and depends on how many discs you have and how much they hold, so we give you a free itemized quote before any work begins. There is a $50 order minimum, not counting drives.
Will the quality drop when you convert it?
We keep it as close to the disc as we can. A DVD is already compressed once, so rather than squeeze it again into a tiny file, we transfer the video into MP4 at high quality. The copy looks like the original disc.
Can you combine DVDs with my tapes and film?
Yes. We can put your converted DVDs on the same drive as your video tapes, film, and photos, organized in folders.
My disc is scratched or skips. Can you still convert it?
Often, yes. Many marginal discs still read on the right equipment. Send it in rather than throwing it out, and the sooner it comes in, the more we can usually recover.
Do I get my original discs back?
Always. Converting a disc does not harm it. You get your files on a drive and your original DVDs back in the same shipment.
