Your Carousel tray order becomes folder order. Your envelope labels become folder names. Your slides stay 3:2, your 8mm film stays 4:3, and your widescreen camcorder tape stays 16:9, because nothing is cropped or stretched to match anything else.

Everything is handled in-house in Orange, CA – nothing is subcontracted or sent overseas, which is the whole reason your numbering can survive, and it is also how your originals stay protected from intake to return. A box that gets split across three subcontractors comes back as three unrelated file dumps.
The belief worth correcting: “mixed” is the hard part
Most people apologize when they describe their collection. Two Carousel trays, a shoebox, four reels in a coffee can, a stack of VHS, a cassette of Grandpa talking. They assume the mix is the problem and that they should sort it first, or send it to five different vendors.
The mix is the easy part. What actually breaks archives is losing the order the family already put them in. Slide trays are chronological because someone sat down in 1974 and made them chronological. That sequence is real information, and it is destroyed the second a tray is dumped into a hopper.
So do not pre-sort. Send everything exactly as it is, in the trays, envelopes, albums and bags you already have. The grouping you arrived with is the grouping we index to.
Question 1: Can you handle my exact mix of formats?
Here is the honest list, with what is and is not supported.
Stills
Slides (standard scan, or with color correction), 35mm negatives, and other negative formats including 110, 126, 127 and medium format. Loose photos, photos still mounted in albums, and whole album pages scanned as a single image. Any size, from wallet prints to panoramas and posters. Documents and x-rays too.
Film
8mm, Super 8 and 16mm, silent or with sound, scanned frame by frame on a touchless transport with cold LED illumination, so the film is not dragged across a hot gate. Priced per foot at three levels: Gold HD (1080p frame-by-frame scan), Platinum HD (HD plus full color correction and grain reduction, the default), and Professional 2K.
Video tape
VHS, VHS-C, 8mm, Hi8, Digital8, MiniDV, Betacam, and existing DVDs you want turned into files. Billing is per tape up to 2 hours of runtime – a 4-hour tape counts as 2 units, a 6-hour tape as 3.
Audio
Audio cassette at $20.00 per hour and reel-to-reel at $40.00 per hour, with a one-reel minimum on reel-to-reel.
Two things need a different route than a prepaid kit: loaded slide carousels and film reels of 600 ft or larger are not kit-shippable. Carousels crack in transit and big reels do not survive the box. Drop them off within about 75 miles of Orange, CA, or pack and ship them yourself. Orders of $2,000.00 or more may qualify for local pickup by us.
Anything not on that list – obsolete broadcast decks, unusual gauges, damaged media that needs hand repair – we will tell you before you ship rather than after. That is a five-minute conversation, not a quote form.
Question 2: Will you keep my numbering and order?
Yes, and this is worth being precise about, because “we keep it organized” means nothing on its own.
The rule is that your physical grouping becomes the digital folder structure, and your sequence becomes the file sequence. A tray labeled “Yosemite 1974” comes back as a folder named for that, with frames in tray order. Negative strips stay in the strips and groupings you sent, and the file names match. If you already number your envelopes, tell us your pattern and we index to it instead of imposing ours, the same naming scheme that keeps 200-plus mixed items in order.
A worked example: 200 stills across four formats, one numbering pattern
Say you send 200 items in four groups, already labeled with your own scheme:

That order totals $136.60 of conversion services. It arrives on one drive with four top-level folders named exactly as above, frames numbered inside each folder in the order they sat in your tray, strip or album. Add a 64 GB flash drive at $25.00 and the drive is yours to keep, along with all your originals.
Two mechanics to note. Slides and photos on one combined drive is standard, not an upgrade. And the $50.00 service minimum applies to conversion services only – the drive does not count toward it, so a small order gets a “minimum order adjustment” line rather than a surprise.
Question 3: What happens to my aspect ratio?
This is where cheap batch pipelines do real damage. A pipeline built for speed picks one output frame and forces everything into it, which means either black bars baked into the picture, a stretch that makes faces wide, or a crop that quietly removes the top of someone’s head.
Aspect ratio is preserved per source, not normalized across the order. A 35mm slide is 3:2 and stays 3:2. Regular 8mm and Super 8 are effectively 4:3 and stay that way inside a 1080p or 2K frame. A VHS tape shot in the 1980s is 4:3; a later camcorder tape shot widescreen is 16:9, and both keep what they were recorded as.
Album pages and oversized prints are scanned as a single image at their own proportions rather than chopped into a standard rectangle. If you specifically want a cropped or letterboxed version for a slideshow, that is a deliberate extra output, never the master.
What you actually receive
Video and film come out as standard MP4 for everyday viewing, and we can also deliver MOV, ProRes, image sequences or uncompressed masters when the material is headed for a keynote, broadcast or long-term preservation. We confirm the target formats with you before the run starts, not after, and if the audio or picture on a finished file is not right, we re-run the transfer at no charge and refund you if another lab can do better.
Storage tells you how much real picture is in a file. A 2-hour tape transfer lands around 12.5 GB and film runs about 31.75 MB per foot at HD, 50 MB per foot at 2K. Slides and photo scans are about 12 MB each, or roughly 24 MB for AI-enhanced scans. When a service hands back a 1 GB file for a 2-hour tape, that gap is thrown-away detail, not clever engineering.
Why sooner matters
Magnetic tape and film both degrade on a clock you cannot see. Tape binder loosens and shedding starts; color film shifts toward magenta and vinegar syndrome sets into acetate. Nothing about a scan reverses that – it only captures whatever is left on the day it runs. Earlier digitization preserves more picture and more sound, permanently.
Which is why the routing question matters more than the price question. Tapes dropped at retail counters like CVS, Walmart or Sam’s Club are shipped out to a large processing facility in Norcross, Georgia, and travel a long way from the person who accepted them. FAQ
Do I have to number or sort my photos before sending them?
No. Send them in the shoeboxes, envelopes, bags and albums they live in. If you already use a numbering pattern, tell us and we index to yours instead of ours.
Will you crop my old home movies to widescreen?
No, not on the master. A cropped version for a slideshow is an extra output you request, never a silent substitution.
What does the mix cost, roughly?
Stills are per item, film is per foot, tape is per tape up to 2 hours, audio is per hour. Slide scanning runs $0.45 per slide standard and $0.65 per slide with color correction at current special rates.
