Legacy Digital Productions is a family-run lab in Orange, California, and every transfer has been done in-house here since 2001 – nothing subcontracted, nothing sent overseas.

What 60 people meant by “better than I expected”
Those 60 reviewers were almost never describing clean, well-stored film. They were describing vinegary Super 8, faded slides, and camcorder tapes that spent two decades in a garage.
The mechanism is more useful than the adjective. Film is scanned frame by frame at HD 1080p or 2K, so nothing is projected on a wall and re-photographed. Platinum HD, our default, adds full color correction and grain reduction; Professional 2K does the same at higher resolution. Those are specs you can put to any other lab, unlike the word “restoration.”
The three complaints, unedited
One review reported lost or mishandled originals. That is isolated, and it is also the worst thing that can happen here, because a reel is not replaceable at any price. One reported audio on a video transfer coming back worse than the source, and the complaint being brushed off. One reported receiving MP4 only when other formats were expected.

What the 40 “fair pricing” reviews are describing
Film is priced per foot, not per reel. That is the whole ballgame. Mail-in services bill per item, so a 3 inch reel and a 7 inch reel are one line each even though one holds 50 feet and the other 400 – eight times the footage, same charge. Per-foot billing means you pay for what is actually wound on the reel.

A worked example, since averages help nobody. Twelve Super 8 reels at 5 inches each is 200 feet apiece, 2,400 feet total. At the Platinum HD silent special rate that is $840.00. Six VHS tapes at $19.95 add $119.70. Services total $959.70, which clears the $250.00 coupon threshold, bringing it to $863.73 before tax and before any drive.
Sound reels cost more per foot than silent, and reels of 50 feet or under carry a $5.00 per-reel technical surcharge, because a 3 inch reel takes nearly as much handling as a 400 foot one. The mechanics reviewers rarely mention but always meet
- Service minimum is $50.00; smaller orders get a minimum order adjustment line. Drives do not count toward it.
- Payment runs in three cumulative stages: $50.00 reserves your place in line at checkout, 50% of the pre-tax order when your media arrives, balance at completion.
- Expected production cycle is 6 weeks. Anticipated, not promised; queue and complexity move it.
- Tapes bill per 2 hours of runtime. A 4-hour tape is 2 units, a 6-hour tape is 3.
- A prepaid shipping kit is $35.00, or $45.00 for large orders (100+ tapes or 7,500+ feet of film), capped at 200 tapes or 15,000 feet per order.
- Conversion of your own media is non-taxable in California. Drives and DVDs are taxable. Return shipping is never taxed.
Slide carousels and film reels of 600 feet or more cannot travel in a kit. Those get dropped off or shipped directly, which is worth knowing before you order one. If your order mixes formats, the naming scheme that keeps 200+ mixed items in order is worth ten minutes before you pack.
Why 10 reviewers brought up the national services
Ten reviews said our results beat big national mail-in operations and Costco. That is a structural difference, not a talent difference. Tapes dropped at a retail counter (CVS, Walmart, Sam’s Club) typically travel to a large centralized facility; the Capture/YesVideo operation in Norcross, Georgia has long handled that retail pipeline. Your reels leave the store, leave the state if you are outside of Georgia, and join a volume queue.

What no review can tell you: your media is on a clock
Magnetic tape is oxide held to plastic by a binder, and that binder absorbs moisture and fails. Film shrinks, curls and turns acidic. Neither reverses.
The version of your tape that exists today is the best version that will ever exist, and every year you wait, the scan you eventually get is a scan of something slightly worse.
That is an argument for going sooner, not an argument for going with us. Nearly 20,000 customers have come through this lab since 2001, and the recurring regret is never the price. It is the reel that had already gone too far.

What file format do I actually get, and can I ask for something better than MP4?
Say what you need at booking and have it written on your estimate. One reviewer received MP4 only when they expected options. Tell us what your editing software or archive needs, and we will confirm what we can deliver before you pay past the reservation stage.
How long does a transfer really take, and can I pay to rush it?
The expected production cycle is 6 weeks. It is an anticipated window, not a hard date, and it moves with queue depth and how complicated your media is. Rush handling exists as its own production track; ask about availability and cost at booking, because it depends on what is already in front of you.
How do I get my files, and how much storage will I need?
Our system estimates your finished library size and recommends the smallest drive that fits with 10% headroom. Flash drives run $15.00 for 16 GB up to $100.00 for 512 GB; external hard drives are $150.00 for 1 TB, $199.00 for 2 TB, $300.00 for 5 TB. Already own a drive? We copy to it for $10.00 per copy. DVD output is $15.00 per disc.
Do you charge me for blank tape or footage that turns out to be empty?
Tapes bill per tape up to 2 hours of runtime, and the final invoice reflects reconciled actual counts rather than your original estimate. If the count changes once the boxes are open, the invoice follows the actuals.
Is it cheaper to ship or to drive it over?
Inside the roughly 75 mile local service area around the Orange studio, dropping off costs nothing and removes the carrier entirely. Outside it, ship your own media or buy a prepaid kit at the rates listed above. Orders of $2,000.00 or more may qualify for local pickup by us.
Do you handle audio tapes and slides in the same order as film?
Yes. Audio cassettes convert at $20.00 per hour, reel-to-reel audio at $40.00 per hour, standard slides at $0.45 each on the special rate. Mixed orders are normal; they just need clear labeling so nothing gets separated from its family group.
