Most people come to this comparison expecting a price fight: cheap box versus fancy app. The more useful split is what each company thinks “digitized” means. One sells you access to your memories. One sells you volume. Neither publishes a high-definition film scan resolution.

Credit where it is due. iMemories has been digitizing for over 20 years, holds 4.4 out of 5 on Trustpilot across more than 1,400 reviews, and only about 6% are one-star, better than most in this category.
Its two real differentiators are AI enhancement of movies and photos, and a polished app that streams them to a TV or phone. If watching enhanced clips from an app is your top priority, we would not talk you out of it.
Two things to weigh: the headline per-tape figure grows once you add AI enhancement, a USB or DVD, and cloud access, which is a yearly subscription rather than a keep-forever file. And since July 2025 your family footage lives inside Ancestry’s ecosystem.
What Legacybox actually is
Legacybox is a brand of AMB Media LLC in Chattanooga, Tennessee. So are Southtree and Kodak Digitizing. It is printed in each brand’s own website footer, and the Better Business Bureau lists them as a single business, so switching between them changes the sticker price, not the facility, the process, or the specs. To its credit, Legacybox publishes what it does. Film is a “one-to-one” capture, their own wording for a straight copy without color correction, restoration, or editing, at 480p standard definition. A one-to-one copy of faded film is still faded film.
Customer complaints about Legacybox follow a pattern: media reported lost or damaged, waits of four to six weeks against a much shorter promised turnaround, and quotes that grew after “additional fees.” One Yelp reviewer writes that the company lost her father’s only video, twenty years of footage, and did not take responsibility; another paid $150 and describes getting back a pixelated DVD with faded colors. We quote per item rather than one headline number, because a 50 ft home reel and a 400 ft 16mm reel are not the same job. The price depends on the format, the footage, and the condition of the item, and the figure you are given is all-in, including the transfer, the color work, and the files, with no add-on tier for resolution and no subscription to keep what is yours. Plain language: what those numbers mean for your reels
480p standard definition is roughly old-DVD resolution. A frame of 8mm film holds more detail than that, so an SD scan discards picture you already own. Scanning at Full HD or 2K captures more than the film itself contains, which is why an HD scan can look better than the reel ever did projected.
File size tells the same story on tape. One to two gigabytes per tape means heavy compression. About 12.5 GB for a two-hour tape means the fine detail survived the encode.
And “AI enhancement” is not a higher-resolution scan. Upscaling guesses at detail that was never captured; a better scan records detail that was always there. If you want the plain numbers instead of adjectives, use the four questions that decide a digitizing service.
The clock neither company mentions
Magnetic tape and film degrade. Binder sheds, color dyes shift, splices dry out. Every year you wait there is slightly less picture left to capture, which means the earliest scan is always the best scan available to you.
That is the real argument against a bargain SD transfer today. It does not stop the decay, and it does not preserve what the film still holds. You end up paying for the job twice.
How the film is handled
Handling is the part no app fixes. Frame-by-frame touchless scanning photographs each frame individually instead of dragging film past a hot lamp, and cold-LED illumination keeps heat off brittle stock. We scan on studio-grade scanners of the type developed for the Academy of Motion Pictures, direct frame scan, cold LED.
Here is what that looks like on one ordinary job you can evaluate for yourself. A customer brought in a 50 ft 8mm home reel from the mid-1960s, badly faded to magenta, the kind of reel a one-to-one 480p capture would return to you still magenta. We scanned it frame by frame at Full HD 1080p on a cold-LED direct frame scanner, then color restored it scene by scene rather than applying one global correction, which brought the skin tones and the green of the lawn back out of the pink cast, with grain reduction on top. Price was a per-item, all-in quote covering the scan, the color work, and the delivered files, quoted in plain numbers before anything was scanned, with no add-on tier for resolution and no subscription to keep the files. So which one?
iMemories if
Streaming enhanced clips from an app is the goal, a yearly cloud fee is fine, and your originals are duplicates rather than only copies.
Legacybox if
You have a big pile of ordinary tapes, lowest sticker per item wins, and standard definition with no color correction is genuinely good enough for those items.
An independent lab if
The media is irreplaceable or faded, and you want HD or 2K files you keep with no subscription, with originals that never enter a mail stream.
