The belief most people arrive with
You have a shelf, or a bin, or a closet corner. Some tapes are labeled in handwriting you recognize. Most searches that end up here start with “best video transfer service near me” or “convert old home movies to digital near me,” and behind them sits one assumption: that the format decides the price.
It does not. The cost driver is running time. A 30-minute MiniDV cassette and a two-hour VHS land on the same line item, because both fit in one two-hour unit. A six-hour VHS recorded in EP mode counts as three units, because capture happens in real time and it genuinely takes three times as long to play.
The second assumption is the prepaid bundle. Box services sell a fixed count of “items” at a flat price, so a nearly blank tape and a packed six-hour tape cost you exactly the same. We price by the two-hour unit instead, which means short collections cost less and long tapes cost more. What “legacy video” actually covers
In plain language, these are all magnetic tape. They fail the same way: the oxide layer holding the picture slowly sheds and demagnetizes, whether you play the tape or not.
Full-size cassettes
VHS and Betamax, the ones that go straight into a living-room deck. Usually 2 to 6 hours per tape.
Camcorder tapes
VHS-C, 8mm, Hi8, Video8, Digital8, MiniDV, MicroMV. Small shells, often 30 to 120 minutes.
Broadcast tape
Betacam, $40.00 per tape ($35.00 each at 25 or more), because it needs different decks.
You do not need to find the old camcorder first. Video transfer equipment is our problem, not yours: we keep and maintain the decks, so just send the tapes themselves. A camcorder that has sat unused for 20 years is usually the riskiest thing you could put a one-of-a-kind tape into.
File size is the honest proxy for quality
Our standard output is a low-compression MP4 at roughly 12.5 GB per two-hour tape. That number is worth caring about, because how much data a lab keeps is the clearest signal of how much of the original picture survived the capture.

Why a 2 GB file and a 12.5 GB file are not the same memory
Heavy compression is how a two-hour tape becomes a file under 2 GB. It works by throwing away detail the encoder guesses you will not miss, and it guesses worst exactly where old video is hardest: grain, fast motion, low light, a face at the far end of a backyard.
At about 12.5 GB per two-hour tape, six times more data is kept. In consumer terms that is the difference between a birthday candle that reads as an orange smear and one you can still see flickering. You can always make a small shareable copy later from a large file. You can never rebuild a large file from a small one.

A worked example
Say you have 18 tapes: 14 standard two-hour VHS and 4 six-hour VHS recorded in EP mode.
- 14 tapes at 2 hours = 14 units. 4 tapes at 6 hours = 12 units. Total 26 units.
- 26 units at the special rate above = $518.70 of conversion services.
- That clears the $250.00 threshold, so the current 10% off coupon applies to services: $466.83.
- 26 units at roughly 12.5 GB is about 325 GB, so the 1 TB hard drive is the comfortable choice.
- Drives are taxable in California; conversion of media you own is not. Return shipping is billed at the UPS carrier rate and never taxed.

Paying and shipping
There is no prepaid bundle to buy blind. Payment runs in three cumulative stages: $50.00 at checkout to buy your place in the queue, 50% of the pre-tax order when your media arrives at the studio, and the balance at completion with California tax on the actual counts.
The service minimum is $50.00. If your conversion services total less, a minimum order adjustment line brings it up, and drives do not count toward that minimum.
To get media to us: walk in or drop off if you are within about 75 miles of the Orange, CA studio, ship it yourself, or order a prepaid shipping kit at $35.00 ($45.00 for large orders of 100+ tapes or 7,500+ feet of film). A kit holds up to 200 tapes, or 10 Betacam tapes, per order.
What transferring sooner actually buys you
Magnetic tape does not fail on a schedule you can watch. It fades in the closet, and by the time playback shows tracking noise and dropouts, some signal is already gone for good.
Film degrades from a different direction. It dries, fades and grows brittle, and every pass through a hot projector bulb dries the reel further while the transport scratches the picture area. That is why film here is scanned frame by frame on studio-grade scanners lit by cold LED: no hot bulb, no contact with the image. One customer sent a 400 foot reel of 16mm color film shot between 1943 and 1945, improperly stored and unplayed for roughly 50 years. The transfer came back better than he expected. Old and badly stored does not automatically mean unrecoverable – but another decade narrows the odds.
