Costco Video Transfer: What Happened, and the Best Alternative (2026)

Looking for Costco’s video, film, or photo transfer service to digitize your old home movies? Here is the honest, up-to-date picture, because what Costco offers today is not what most people are searching for.

Costco discontinued its own transfer service

Costco no longer runs its own video and photo transfer service. The photo side moved to Shutterfly in January 2023, and the old standalone transfer sites (costcophotocenter.com and costcodvd.com) are gone; both domains no longer work. It is also worth knowing that Costco never digitized in-house: for about 15 years the work was handled by an outside company called YesVideo, and Costco was just the storefront.

Today, “Costco video transfer” means a partnership on Costco Next with Capture, which is that same company, YesVideo, under a new name. If you order it through Costco now, your media is mailed to Capture’s facility in Norcross, Georgia (shipped via FedEx), digitized there, and mailed back. So the trusted Costco name is on the listing, but a mail-order company does the work.

The quality difference, side by side

Price is one thing. What your memories actually look like when they come back is another. Here is the head-to-head on quality, using each company’s own published specs where available.

Quality Costco / Capture (YesVideo) Legacy Digital
Film scan resolution Not published (budget SD-class) Full HD 1080p or 2K, higher than the film itself
Color and restoration None stated Scene-by-scene color restoration plus grain reduction
Videotape detail Not published Low compression, about 12.5 GB per 2-hour tape, monitored in real time
Photos and slides Typically 300 to 600 dpi Photos at 1,000 dpi; slides at 4,300+ dpi
Equipment Mail-in bulk facility Studio-grade scanners (Academy of Motion Pictures type), cold-LED, direct frame scan

Competitor figures are their own published specs where available; “not published” or “typical” means no public spec or the common mail-in norm. Legacy Digital figures are our standard specifications.

Trusted by media professionals. Legacy Digital digitizes on studio-grade scanners (the type developed for the Academy of Motion Pictures) and is the choice of Hollywood studios and executives, including the makers of the Steven Spielberg documentary (who entrusted us with reels from Mr. Spielberg’s early career), Netflix’s Lucy and Desi, and Sumner Redstone’s personal archive, along with Chapman University Film School and many universities, libraries, and municipalities.

If you just want the Costco-style option

If your goal is simply a few standard tapes on a DVD at the lowest price, the Capture service sold through Costco Next is a legitimate, convenient budget choice, and plenty of people are happy with it. Just go in knowing it is a mail-order transfer done in Georgia, not an in-house Costco service, and that a physical copy and lasting access cost extra.

The better option for memories you cannot replace

If quality and keeping your memories safe matter more to you than the lowest sticker price, an independent, in-house lab is worth a look.

What often happens with drop-off and fill-a-box services:

  • Film is captured as a plain one-to-one transfer, with no color correction, grain reduction, or restoration.
  • Your irreplaceable originals are mailed to a shared facility in another state, and the store or brand you handed them to often disclaims responsibility for loss or damage.
  • Finished files sit in a cloud that expires or behind a subscription, and a physical USB or disc costs extra.
  • If they decide an item cannot be transferred, you can still pay for it.

How Legacy Digital is different: we are an independent lab in Orange, California, digitizing in-house since 2001, and we have never lost a single item across more than a million reels and millions of items handled. We do true frame-by-frame HD and 2K film scanning with scene-by-scene color restoration, we quote per item so you know the cost up front, and you keep your finished files and your originals. No shared warehouse, no expiring cloud, and a real person you can call.

Frequently asked questions

Does Costco still do video transfer?

Not as its own service. Costco discontinued it; the photo side moved to Shutterfly in 2023. “Costco video transfer” today is a Costco Next partnership with Capture (YesVideo).

Who actually did Costco’s transfers?

For about 15 years the work was fulfilled by YesVideo, a third-party processor, not by Costco itself. YesVideo now operates as Capture.

Where is my media processed now?

If ordered through Costco Next, it is mailed to Capture’s facility in Norcross, Georgia, and returned by mail.

Is there a local alternative?

Yes. Legacy Digital is an independent lab that digitizes in-house, so your originals stay local and one accountable business handles them, with frame-by-frame film scanning and color restoration.
