Convert Your VHS Tapes to Digital
Bring them by our Orange studio or send the box. We do the rest, and your tapes come home.
Every tape is played on our own maintained decks in Orange, California and watched in real time while it captures. You get MP4 files you can play on any phone, TV, or computer. Blank tapes and recorded TV are never billed.
Trusted with the family tapes used in the Netflix documentary Lucy and Desi.
Thinking About a VHS to Digital Converter?
Plenty of people look for a converter first, and for a few tapes it can make sense. Here is the honest comparison, so you can pick what is right for your tapes.
| Doing it yourself | Sending it to us | |
|---|---|---|
| What you need | A working VCR, the converter, a computer, and time | Just the tapes |
| Your time per tape | The full length of the tape, played start to finish | None |
| Picture quality | Depends on the VCR and the converter | Maintained decks, time-based correction included on VHS and VHS-C |
| File size per two-hour tape | Usually small, heavily compressed files | About 12.5 GB, low compression |
| A tape that squeals, sticks, or jams | Can chew the tape in an old VCR | Stopped, inspected, and tried in more than one deck |
| Blank tapes and recorded TV | You sit through them | Skipped, never billed |
A converter is fine for a handful of tapes you do not mind risking. For the ones you cannot replace, we would rather you send them to someone with the right equipment, whether that is us or not.

Andrew G. · Google review
“I just has an old VHS of our ship's decommissioning given to me and I had no idea what to do with it. Legacy took care of that (DVD and MP4) and were very friendly and professional. I would use them again and recommend them to others.”

How much does it cost?
Home tapes are $19.95 per two-hour tape, the same for every home format. Tapes of 2 to 4 hours count as two, blank tapes and recorded TV are never billed, and there is a $50 order minimum. Twelve tapes come to about $239.40, plus the drive you choose at its cost.
Can I get my tapes on a USB drive or DVD?
Yes. You get MP4 files on a flash drive or hard drive, and DVDs too if you want something for a DVD player. You can also send your own drive.
Is there a service near me?
If you are in Southern California, drop off at our studio at 202 W. Lincoln Ave., Suite A, in Orange (walk-ins Monday to Friday, 8AM to 4PM), or ask about free pickup for qualified orders. Anywhere else in the US, ship to us with tracking and we call you when your box arrives.
My tape squeals, sticks, or will not play. Can it be saved?
Often, yes. Stop playing it at home, because each play can strip more of the coating. We try troublesome tapes in more than one deck, though heavily damaged tapes have limits.
What if something cannot be converted?
You are not charged for it, and any amount already paid for it is refunded. We tell you what could not be converted, and why, and the original comes back to you either way.
Is it safe to send my only copies?
Every item is logged and tracked, handled in-house in Orange, California, and returned to you. Across more than a million items, we have never lost one.
How long does it take?
Processing time depends on our queue and the size of your order, so call us at (888) 405-2685 for current times. Working toward a date? Ask about priority ordering, and we will tell you honestly what we can finish by then.
Do I need to sort anything first?
No. Send a mixed box of tapes, film, photos, or slides and we sort and identify everything. It all goes on one drive in organized folders.
